The first 2 weeks

Baby Liam is already 2 weeks old! Time needs to slow down a little bit.

Life at home has been an easy adjustment. Our little apartment has been taken over with baby stuff!

The first couple days had it's ups and downs. We were discharged from the hospital on Friday the 13th... dun dun dun! He was supposed to get a circumcision that day and the nurse told us to make sure he ate a good meal beforehand and to supplement with some formula since my milk hadn't come in yet. Bad idea. It messed with his little tummy and gave him horrible gas. Friday night he cried and cried. Neither Chad nor I could console him and it broke my heart. I was afraid that we got in over our heads. We both thought we might need to go back to the hospital to make sure he wasn't broken. We made it though and Saturday he was really good for us all day and night.

We had a postpartum appt on Sunday with the lactation specialists at the hospital. They checked our vital signs (all good) and watched me feed him once to make sure we were getting the hang of nursing. Our nurse was so nice and she told us we should come back and Liam should teach the other newborns how to latch on. :) He's been a great eater and so far we haven't had any major issues.

Monday we went to the pediatrician to check out some goopy eye issues. It had been there for a few days and we wanted to make sure it wasn't an infection and it wasn't. We were really glad we ended up going though because Liam had jaundice! I noticed his eyes looking a little yellow but didn't know it was as bad as it was. The doctor checked his blood and they ended up ordering a light blanket for him to hang out in. His bilirubin was in the really high zone. So we got this machine delivered to our house that has a light that we strapped to his back 24 hours a day. We had to keep him on the light for 3 days. The first night I broke down crying because I felt so bad that he was "sick." I know lots of babies get jaundice, I had it when I was a baby, but with the hormones and everything I just couldn't handle it. Chad held me for a while and made me feel better that everything would be ok. We had to go to the doctor everyday to re-check his blood. Poor little boy had to get poked in the heel so many times. On Thursday the levels had gone down enough that we were in the clear.

We had a good few days after that. Liam seems to be adjusting into a routine and we're getting better at reading his cues and cries. We've made lots of trips out to my parents for visits and they've been a great help.

This last Tuesday he finally got his circumcision done. They were supposed to do it in the hospital and flubbed the doctors schedule so we had to wait. My sister went with me and we had barely entered the procedure room and I started crying. I couldn't stand to think of my poor baby in pain or strapped down. The nurse kindly asked me to wait in the lobby while the procedure happened and my sister stayed with him in the room. He did great though and only cried because he was hungry. Our first diaper change was traumatic for both of us, he pooped all over and then peed on himself. But he's now healing well and he seems to be in less pain.

Wednesday our baby boy turned 2 weeks old. I can't believe it! We had an appt with the pediatrician and he's growing and putting on weight. He's now above his birth weight by about 2 ounces and grew half an inch. He's 19% for weight, 79% for height, and 46% for head circumference. He's tall and skinny :)

He's also going through a growth spurt which means he's eating all the time. I've been super tired but I love seeing the chub that's starting to show up on him.
